A Prayer to Start Your Day in God's Hands

A Prayer to Start Your Day in God’s Hands: Why Starting Your Morning in God’s Hands Changes Everything

We’ve all been there. Before your feet even touch the floor, it’s like your brain is already moving a million miles a second.

My mind, thank God, isn’t what it used to be. But I still catch myself sometimes, late at night — I’ll wake up and just can’t fall back asleep, even though I know I have to be up again in a few hours. No matter how much I try, it’s like a loop. I used to go sit in the living room and watch something, hoping it would make me sleepy. Sometimes it worked. Sometimes it didn’t.

I used to be very addicted to checking emails, the news, the market — first thing, every time. And it made me more anxious, groggy, irritable. It’s an exhausting way to live.

The funny thing is, I knew I needed to change what I did every morning, yet it was extremely hard for me not to. I couldn’t help myself — checking my phone, email, social media, YouTube. Looking back, I’m baffled at how I lived like that: always on the defensive, absorbing things I had no control over. And for someone like me, once it’s in, it doesn’t come back out easily. It stays in my head the whole day.

Starting your morning should be spiritual, intentional, peaceful — and honestly, how your morning goes starts with how you end the night before. I’ll get into that in another post, because that’s an entire beast of its own. I say that because it still baffles me how much my life has changed once I started owning my morning.

Now, when I wake up, I’m already prepared for the day ahead. My gym clothes are laid out and easy to grab. I decluttered my house the night before, so there’s no visual stress waiting for me. For me personally, waking up earlier than my household is becoming a must — and something I’m working harder at — so I can get the things I need to do done before the day and its demands begin.

Why Starting With God Changes the Whole Day

Here’s a version with smoother sentence flow, but keeping your voice and cadence intact:

Starting my day with God really changes everything. I can feel it. When I wake up early and start my day listening to worship music, meditating, and spending time in prayer — just those first couple of minutes, as soon as I wake up, with the Lord — my whole day changes drastically.

And it’s even better when I wake up right as that alarm goes off, before the family’s awake. I’m not rushed into making breakfast, cleaning up after the kids, making sure their clothes are changed, all the stuff that has to get done. I don’t have to do any of that yet. I’m completely focused, and I give those first couple of minutes to the Lord in worship. My day is completely different because of it.

The energy I have, the focus, the peace, the patience — even on days I woke up early and worked late the night before — is so much more than on the days I wake up when the kids wake up and the house is already chaotic. Rushing to make breakfast, rushing to make coffee, the spouse needs coffee too and is doing their own thing, wanting something — it’s just rush, rush, rush. Then everybody’s gone, and I’m rushing to the gym, rushing to finish my workout, rushing through everything else. My whole day ends up hectic, even though I technically got an extra hour of sleep.

But if I wake up earlier than everybody in the house, as soon as that alarm goes off, and I spend that time with the Lord — that’s amazing to me. My mind is at peace. My heart, my spirit, is at peace. I’m extremely calm. I know exactly what I need to do and how to structure my day. I’ve taken care of myself, had my coffee, eaten breakfast, organized what needs to happen before everybody else comes. And when they do come, everything is already set up — not just because I woke up early, but because I spent that time with the Lord first. It’s night and day.

And I’ll say this: if I still get up early but skip that time with the Lord, my day is still hectic. So it’s extremely important for me to spend time with Him — thanking Him, sitting in gratitude, at least listening to worship music that elevates my spirit — before I step out into my day. It’s helped me dramatically, more than I can even put into words. That’s been my experience, and I know a lot of Christians who do this every morning — they own their morning by spending time with God. For me, owning my morning as a Christian means spending time with the Lord: worship, prayer, gratitude, and thanksgiving.

Mark 1:35 – describes Jesus Himself rising “very early in the morning, while it was still dark,” to go to a solitary place and pray before His day began. Powerful because it shows even Jesus modeled this pattern before the demands of the day hit.

You Don’t Have to Have It All Together to Start With God

You don’t have to have it all together to start with God. You really don’t. We are human beings having a human experience. Nobody is perfect — the only one who is perfect is God. Most people assume they have to have it all together before they can start with God, but you will never have it all together on your own. God is extremely big and perfect, and only through Jesus Christ can we have it all together. The only way to get there is to get closer to God through our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ.

We don’t need this spiritual perfectionism — this idea that once we get our fear or anxiety under control, once we stop making mistakes, once we have a consistent routine, then we’ll start praying. That’s not how it works. We come as we are. The way to perfection is through God alone. God is not a destination we reach after we’ve fixed ourselves. He’s our companion who works with us regardless of our situation, our mess, our past.

We don’t need to hide our rough edges the way the world teaches us to through social media — the way we edit our photos before we post them. We don’t need to bring that same mentality into our spiritual lives. God doesn’t ask for a polished presentation. He only asks for our honesty. If you’re waiting until you have everything figured out, you’re going to be waiting a long time. God meets you right where you are. He’s not standing at the finish line of your self-improvement. He meets you in the chaos. He meets you in the doubt. He meets you in your unfinished business. He meets you at your lowest point.

That has been my testimony — that God, regardless of our past, our situation, our hearts, regardless of what we think or how much we’ve messed up, is always with us. When I look back on my life, I can see His hand guiding me to where I am right now. I couldn’t see it in the moment. Life was chaotic, I was fearful, a lot was happening. But through it all, God opened doors for me, connected me with the right people, brought people into my life, took me out of loneliness, gave me rest. But that only happens once we’re honest and truthful with God. Intercession is essential. Once we trust His process, the gift that comes from Him is unbelievable.

I used to think I needed fancy words, the way a lot of pastors speak, or a clean record, a clear path. But God doesn’t care about that. He only cares about us — about how we humble ourselves to come close to Him. Because without Him, we are nothing.
